Bucknell University is a private liberal arts university located in the town of Lewisburg, which is a borough in Union County, Pennsylvania, USA, a past commercial center for the general farming region. The town was founded by Ludwig Derr, in 1784, who was an early settler of the area where Lewisburg stands today. Due to its beautiful old buildings, the downtown area of Lewisburg has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, in the 19th century.
The university was founded in 1846, as the University at Lewisburg, and traces its roots to a group of Baptists, from White Deer Valley Baptist Church, who said that it is `Desirable that a Literary Institution should be established in Central Pennsylvania, embracing a High School for male pupils, another for females, a College and also a Theological Institution`.
Over the years, Bucknell University grew, and it is today attended by students from 50 states and 50 other different countries, presenting an enrollment of nearly 3500 undergraduate students, as well as 150 living-on-campus graduate students. The university consists of almost 200 student organizations, a large Greek presence, and it is also part of the Patriot League in Division I athletics.
The athletic teams from Bucknell are known as the Bucknell Bison, competing in Patriot League for Division I sports and Division I-AA in football. They've won the 1st Orange Bowl, including the 1st Division II NCAA Swimming & Diving championships, in 1964. In 2005, the men's basketball team made it to the NCAA men's basketball tournament, becoming the first Patriot League team to win an NCAA tournament game, defeating the athletic teams from Kansas (64-63).
